Iron Butt Rally 2001

The Iron Butt, Mother of all rallies. 11,000 miles in 11 days. Billed as the "World's Toughest Motorcycle Competition"

Where do I even start? How about by just getting a chance to participate. The numbers are not released but it is safe to say around 1000 people enter the lottery for the 100 available slots. I got my place by winning the 1999 Midwest Fest and bypassing the drawing.

This gave me over 2 years to get prepared. I'm still not sure if that was a good thing or not. As I came to find out on about day 7 of the rally mental preparedness is what really counts. I won't comment further on that yet, but I will tell you this is how I had the bike set-up:

1985 BMW K100RS
With a Parabellum windscreen and Sargent saddle showing 92,000 miles at the start.
Fuel
Stock 5.2 gallon tank and custom aluminium 4.3 gallon cell on a Reynolds rack.
Lights
80/100 watt headlight and 2 Piaa 910 - 110 watt driving beams.
Communications
Cyclecomm CB with stero interface and J&M cell phone override.
Navigation
Garmin Street Pilot GPS and Rand McNally.
Tunes
Rio Volt mp3 player and 2gig of my favorite songs
